Exciting Plans for 2025!

Lowell Sheppard • January 3, 2025

Happy New Year, friends!

As we welcome 2025, I'm thrilled to share some exciting plans for the first half of the year.

This spring, I'll embark on a unique sailing journey through Japan - a voyage that blends adventure, culture, and a quest for understanding the secrets of longevity.

Starting in Okinawa, often called a "Blue Zone" for its high concentration of centenarians, this expedition will focus on exploring the lives of Japan's oldest citizens. Okinawa's reputation as a hub of long life and happiness has drawn researchers and storytellers from around the world.

But did you know that Shimane Prefecture, another stop on my journey, actually has the highest rate of centenarians in Japan? It's a must-visit for me, as it's also the one prefecture I've yet to explore.

Sailing the Cherry Blossom Front

This voyage is not just about the destination - it's about the journey itself. I'll be following the Cherry Blossom Front, sailing north along Japan's archipelago as the blooms unfold. The trip will take me to stunning coastal regions, from subtropical Okinawa to the rugged cliffs of Itoigawa, and eventually to Hokkaido. Along the way, I'll harbor-hop, keep overnight passages to a minimum, and spend time in port learning from locals, visiting cherry blossom sites, and delving into the sociological and spiritual aspects of aging in Japan.

Join Me on This Adventure

One of the things I love most about Pacific Solo is how it has connected me with like-minded adventurers and creators. For this journey, I'm looking for potential crew members to join me on certain legs - particularly those with mechanical, engineering, or sailing skills.

Additionally, I'd love to welcome artists, writers, content creators, or researchers as "residents" aboard Wahine while we're in port. Whether you're inspired by the cherry blossoms, Japan's natural beauty, or its rich culture, the boat could be your creative base for a few days.

If this sparks your interest, get in touch via the  form at the foot of this page to learn more about the schedule and how you can get involved. And even if you're not looking to join the voyage, I'd love to hear your thoughts or advice in the comments.

What's on the Horizon for Pacific Solo

This year, Pacific Solo shifts its focus to storytelling and exploration within Japan. While the dream of crossing the ocean may no longer be attainable for me, I'm energized by this new chapter of exploration - diving deeper into Japan's landscapes, culture, and its fascinating demographic of centenarians.

Thank you for being part of this journey. Let's make 2025 a year of discovery, connection, and inspiration.

This past year, I've been based in the Ryukyu Islands, particularly Okinawa - a region renowned as a "Blue Zone" for its high concentration of centenarians. But as I've discovered, other prefectures like Shimane and Kagoshima are rewriting the narrative, often surpassing Okinawa in longevity statistics.
Survival Japanese for sailors

As more cruisers head to Japan, communication becomes crucial - not just for getting by, but for truly connecting with people. While some folks are natural language learners, I've always found it a bit of a challenge. But after spending five years cruising and visiting over 70 ports, I've picked up a few key words that have made a world of difference.

I'm thrilled to share that this week I will begin a 30-45 day passage from Hawaii to Japan. However, this time, I'll be sailing aboard, Ramona Rae (an Ingrid 38) instead of Wahine (my Gib Sea 402).

Just a quick update from dry land. I hopped off Wahine a few days ago and left her securely moored in Buren Bay.

I'm currently docked in the small port of Uken in the far south of Japan. Yes, I've finally reached the island of Amami-Oshima - at the third attempt - and can check another item off my Dream List!

I was away for a couple of weeks attending the Annapolis Boat Show. Wahine waited patiently for me to return to give her bottom a clean fresh coat of paint. It's good to see her clear of barnacles. We went back in the water a few moments ago and now enjoying the still and quiet of an autumn evening in Niihama Marina.
Sailors write their plans in the sand
By Lowell Sheppard May 24, 2022
I heard a seasoned sailor say recently that, sailors write their plans in sand at low tide. I have certainly discovered that to be true. Yesterday, I completed a loop ( about 1,500 kms) around Kyushu Island. It was not my initial goal.

Kuroshio Current

I have never before revealed this publicly. It was only after releasing this video that my chronic mispronunciation and mis-spelling of "Kuroshio" current became evident. But, misspelled or not, the Kuroshio current, like my "disorder" is a very real impediment to my forward progress.

Just before I left Wahine, for a few days, I was asked to move her mooring to a safer berth in case of a typhoon. Here are some important things to know about Japan during typhoon season.
