PacSolo 2-Year Anniversary: YouTube Live Event

Calling all Never Too Laters . . .

...for a Special YouTube Live event to mark the two year anniversary since I stepped on board my dream.

It is two years ago that I first step on board my dream.

At my 64th Birthday Party in March 2019 I announced my dream to buy a boat, live on her, learn to sail and eventually cross an ocean.

Honestly, at the time, it was only words and I thought the reality was years away. But within mere weeks, Wahine and I found each other and in June I signed a contract for her and moved on board July 1st. Wow… just wow! I am truly learning that it is Never Too Late and now, two years on, I have left the marina and am cruising around Japan in preparation for my crossing of the Pacific. I came into this with so many fears. One of them was climbing the mast. So, one of the first things I did was to ascend the mast and view Wahine from above. I have been up the mast countless times and love doing it now. I have been facing every fear and challenge one by one since. And there have been many and no doubt many more . . but as my brother reminds me and others too . . I am living the dream!

So, to mark this important anniversary for Wahine, me, and indeed the Pacific Solo community, I will be having a YOUTUBE live event. I am excited that my brother Brent, is going to join me to interview, or in his words interrogate, me about Pacific Solo and the steps I have taken to bring the dream into reality. He will be in British Columbia at his mountain side Tiny House and I will be on my boat somewhere in the waters off Shikoku or Kyushu.

You know, I did not set out to inspire anyone, (except my grandson, Eli). But along the way, I have realized that many of those who are following me on YouTube are just like me: a NEVER TOO LATER. And that, like me, you want to make a dream come true despite a lack of experience, knowledge, and perhaps even, money.

As a Never-Too-Later, you have a dream and are looking for the tools to bring them into reality and are looking for the inspiration and where-with-all to see it become a reality.

Are you ready to get started? Mark it on your calendar now!

You can participate in this special event by, not only by watching live but, by posting any questions and comments which I will endeavor to address during the broadcast.

Plus . . I will be making a very important announcement, live!
I am excited about it and I think many of you will be too. My recent quick dash to Tokyo was to prepare for the announcement and I was able to:

  • visit my Fitness Sponsor UFC GYM for an assessment,
  • enjoy a Russian supper with my friend (and shore team member) Nikolay,
  • finally sail with Team Anais, and
  • be beaten handily in Chess by my grandson.

Pacific Solo YT LIVE Event:
Never Too Late Special

Japan: 10 am, July 4th (Japan Time)

Vancouver: 6 pm, July 3rd

New York: 9 pm, July 3rd

London: 2 am, July 4th (Rise & Shine early, my UK friends!)

Pacific Solo is really a misnomer. I have only gotten this far because of the community that has formed around the Pacific Solo idea. I am humbled, not only by the sea but, by the generosity and love of others.

Below are the various ways you can support Pacific Solo, both financially and just good ol' moral support.

This past year, I've been based in the Ryukyu Islands, particularly Okinawa - a region renowned as a "Blue Zone" for its high concentration of centenarians. But as I've discovered, other prefectures like Shimane and Kagoshima are rewriting the narrative, often surpassing Okinawa in longevity statistics.

As we welcome 2025, I'm thrilled to share some exciting plans for the first half of the year. This spring, I'll embark on a unique sailing journey through Japan - a voyage that blends adventure, culture, and a quest for understanding the secrets of longevity.

As more cruisers head to Japan, communication becomes crucial - not just for getting by, but for truly connecting with people. While some folks are natural language learners, I've always found it a bit of a challenge. But after spending five years cruising and visiting over 70 ports, I've picked up a few key words that have made a world of difference.

I'm thrilled to share that this week I will begin a 30-45 day passage from Hawaii to Japan. However, this time, I'll be sailing aboard, Ramona Rae (an Ingrid 38) instead of Wahine (my Gib Sea 402).

Just a quick update from dry land. I hopped off Wahine a few days ago and left her securely moored in Buren Bay.

I'm currently docked in the small port of Uken in the far south of Japan. Yes, I've finally reached the island of Amami-Oshima - at the third attempt - and can check another item off my Dream List!

I was away for a couple of weeks attending the Annapolis Boat Show. Wahine waited patiently for me to return to give her bottom a clean fresh coat of paint. It's good to see her clear of barnacles. We went back in the water a few moments ago and now enjoying the still and quiet of an autumn evening in Niihama Marina.

Sailors write their plans in the sand
By Lowell Sheppard May 24, 2022
I heard a seasoned sailor say recently that, sailors write their plans in sand at low tide. I have certainly discovered that to be true. Yesterday, I completed a loop ( about 1,500 kms) around Kyushu Island. It was not my initial goal.

Kuroshio Current
By Lowell Sheppard November 8, 2021
I have never before revealed this publicly. It was only after releasing this video that my chronic mispronunciation and mis-spelling of "Kuroshio" current became evident. But, misspelled or not, the Kuroshio current, like my "disorder" is a very real impediment to my forward progress.
