Having moved up my departure for Vancouver to next spring, I have reviewed all that I need to do and have identified four areas where I need to get ready.
Because of moving up my departure date, I have to accelerate my activities considerably and achieve 80% readiness in each of these areas by January - so that I can get my first foray (one week) to distant offshore in February or March 2021 - and the remaining 20%, by April.
Wahine needs a number of things upgraded, added and repaired before it is safe for me, and in fact for her, to receive the certification needed to be allowed to go offshore. These include a new jib sail, furler, storm sail, life raft, a suite of electronics, plus ideally, solar and hydro generators.
I need to be ready physically and mentally. On the physical front, I am pleased to announce that I have a fitness sponsor who will be announced soon who in addition to cash, they are helping me achieve weight-loss, muscle-mass, and agility goals. Plus, I have a sleep sponsor - more news about them to follow! Also, on the mental front, I am spending considerable time reading, talking, and listening to those who have more experience than I about the implications of being alone in a remote place for extended periods of time.
Pacific Solo has turned out to be a 3-year plan and therefore I have a three year budget. Two-thirds of which has been funded partly by sponsors, and mostly by me. I have exhausted my personal resources and so, for this final phase, I am recruiting more sponsors. There is the possibility of a TV Documentary (discussions are in an advanced stage) which could help provide sponsors bang for buck. More news to follow.
With the help of the International Academic Forum, A Place to Grow in Tokyo, Discovery Bay School in Hong Kong, and Mie International School in Mie Ken, I am developing relationships with educators and students so that I can be a floating classroom for a select number of students and teachers.
So wish me luck as I seek to be 80% ready in the next few weeks. I must achieve this in order to have the trial offshore in February and depart in the prescribed weather window of June when the prevailing winds are in my favor.
