Season 2: Area One and Beyond

Realizing My Dream

One year has passed since I announced my Pacific Solo dream.
Here I am, now living part-time on S.V. Wahine, a Gibsea 402, at Yumenoshima Marina in Tokyo. Yumenoshima is an island made out of garbage and literally means "island of dreams".
My learning curve has been steep, and changes dramatic. Much of which has been captured in the Captains Log of Season One for the Pacific Solo You Tube Channel

Big thanks to Ryan Seale and Bruce McCaughan for their incredible support and help getting the YT Channel, and the website & blogs up and running.

Looking Back and Looking Ahead

If Season 1 (year 1 of my adventure) was marked by moving from mere words to the reality of owning a boat, then  the Season 2 challenge is to advance from sailing and training in Tokyo Bay to making to Blue Water!

So, in Season 2 you will hear a lot about Area One and hopefully follow me as I explore its Blue Water.
My intended departure date for Nemo North (in the Middle of North Pacific) and eventually Vancouver is the spring of 2022.

Season 2 Challenges

But first, I have much to learn and achieve, not the least of which is getting Wahine certified for Blue Water . This is as much regulatory as it is financial.

Regulatory in that while, at the moment, having passed my Class-One License  (it took three attempts) as the skipper, I am licensed to sail offshore, the privilege doesn't extend to the vessel itself - in this case, S.V. Wahine. One of the requirements is that she has a Marine VHF radio with a licensed operator. So, I have another step to take. The challenge is that the exam is exclusively in Japanese. Arrgghhh!

Also, there are questions as to whether a foreigner is permitted to take a Japan-registered vessel out of Japanese waters. As such, even though I am the owner, I may be forbidden. So, these are things I am working on.

Supporting Pacific Solo

Then there are the financials. I am not a man of means so, as I outlined in an earlier blog, I have to find ways to monetize and support the endeavor.

Pacific Solo Sponsors

I need sponsors who will keep me going, those who will keep me safe , and those who want to help others learn (support the learning project for students, schools, and families) as well as Patrons to support regularly. Also, to help support the project, I have launched a Store.

But, this is a time when many companies and individuals, rightly so, are protecting any cash reserves they have to ride out the storm caused by the COVID-19 crisis.

So, Season 2 is full of challenges. Wish me luck and I trust you stay safe and able to rise to the challenges you are facing.

This past year, I've been based in the Ryukyu Islands, particularly Okinawa - a region renowned as a "Blue Zone" for its high concentration of centenarians. But as I've discovered, other prefectures like Shimane and Kagoshima are rewriting the narrative, often surpassing Okinawa in longevity statistics.

As we welcome 2025, I'm thrilled to share some exciting plans for the first half of the year. This spring, I'll embark on a unique sailing journey through Japan - a voyage that blends adventure, culture, and a quest for understanding the secrets of longevity.
Survival Japanese for sailors

As more cruisers head to Japan, communication becomes crucial - not just for getting by, but for truly connecting with people. While some folks are natural language learners, I've always found it a bit of a challenge. But after spending five years cruising and visiting over 70 ports, I've picked up a few key words that have made a world of difference.

I'm thrilled to share that this week I will begin a 30-45 day passage from Hawaii to Japan. However, this time, I'll be sailing aboard, Ramona Rae (an Ingrid 38) instead of Wahine (my Gib Sea 402).

Just a quick update from dry land. I hopped off Wahine a few days ago and left her securely moored in Buren Bay.

I'm currently docked in the small port of Uken in the far south of Japan. Yes, I've finally reached the island of Amami-Oshima - at the third attempt - and can check another item off my Dream List!
October update from PacificSolo

I was away for a couple of weeks attending the Annapolis Boat Show. Wahine waited patiently for me to return to give her bottom a clean fresh coat of paint. It's good to see her clear of barnacles. We went back in the water a few moments ago and now enjoying the still and quiet of an autumn evening in Niihama Marina.

Sailors write their plans in the sand
By Lowell Sheppard May 24, 2022
I heard a seasoned sailor say recently that, sailors write their plans in sand at low tide. I have certainly discovered that to be true. Yesterday, I completed a loop ( about 1,500 kms) around Kyushu Island. It was not my initial goal.

Kuroshio Current
By Lowell Sheppard November 8, 2021
I have never before revealed this publicly. It was only after releasing this video that my chronic mispronunciation and mis-spelling of "Kuroshio" current became evident. But, misspelled or not, the Kuroshio current, like my "disorder" is a very real impediment to my forward progress.
